Due to attacks on party supporters, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has withdrawn from a Lagos State Governorship debate.
The organizers of the "ThePlatform debate for Lagos governorship candidates" made the announcement on Sunday.
According to the debate moderator, Victor Oladokun, the governor, who is running for re-election as a candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, backed out of the debate because he did not want to share the stage with an unidentified contestant.
"As a result of this incident, which has already gone viral, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced yesterday (Saturday) through his spokesman that the governor will withdraw from the debate because he does not want to share the stage with a specific candidate whose supporters allegedly carried out the attack," he said.
Recall that over the weekend, supporters of one political party were allegedly found firing gunshots at supporters of another party in the Surulere area of the state.
Olufunso Doherty of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party (LP), and Olajide Adediran of the Peoples Democratic Party will take part in the debate (PDP).
Meanwhile, in response to the allegation leveled against his party, Adediran stated that his supporters will not shoot at the people they campaign for in the Surulere area of the state, and he warned all of his supporters to refrain from engaging in any form of electoral violence.
