Why Should I Be Good?

In this article, we will be taking up why you and I should be good. A high level of concentration is required for this piece of work, because I won’t want you to misunderstand the message we intend to pass across.

I saw a text on someone’s T-shirt. It read: “Nothing is good or bad, but thinking makes it so”. We live in a world where so many people exist, yet only a few live. What? You don’t understand what I mean? Statistics has shown that only negligible 5% of the world’s population “THINKS”which is very pathetic, while majority of the world’s population prefer to die than use their God-given brains. The reason being that no one of such people believe they can be good in whatever they do or in that career path of theirs. And since being good starts in the mind, thinking becomes somehow impossible for them. The role of critical thinking in this regard is one that cannot be overemphasized, as it plays a great role in self-development, climbing to success, et cetera.

Okay, let’s stop diverting from the subject matter and start digging. Nowadays, there’s a neglect of morals in our society, especially with the rise in social vices like cultism, rape, armed robbery, drug abuse, prostitution, gambling, pornography and so on and so forth. Quite a lot of factors are responsible for these vices. These factors may include: poor upbringing by parents in the aspects of self-respect and respect for others, faithfulness, trustworthiness, accountability, obedience, dignity, et cetera; bad role models like some celebrities (mostly entertainers) who are chain smokers, rapists, drug addicts, et cetera. These irresponsible individuals seriously influence the lifestyle of our young ones, since their fields are loved mainly by youths, teens and children.

Many are beginning to think that to be “HIGH” or rude at times, or able to talk to people the way they like is the new classic way of life, or an effective tool to gain recognition and respect from others; but is that actually true? Well to some: “YES!” and to some: “NO!” But you and I know that being good and gentle is just the right way. You know it deep inside you. Who doesn’t want to be addressed as a good man, or woman, or lady, or guy, or boy, or girl; by everyone around him or her? Come on, tell me who?

Being good gives you respect and a high place in the minds of people. It obviously makes one stand out from the crowd. A second reason why you should be good is the fact that we were not born “BAD GUYS”. Everyone you see behaving abnormal, tried and forced themselves to adapt to that negative behavior that you see them exhibiting. Now that sounds like I’m being economical with the truth, because a lot of people believe that it’s easier to be bad than good. Believe you me, that’s just a mindset—it’s where the problem lies too. This is the point I get to bring back the concept of thinking that I talked about earlier.

When you “THINK”, it’s like a conversation between you and your mind. There is an exchange of information between the two parties. Your mind contains your conscience which is built on the principle that says: “IT’S GOOD TO BE GOOD AND IT’S BAD TO BE BAD”. This is like a standard that tells you that an action or decision is good or bad. I stated earlier that we we're not born “BAD GUYS”, because your conscience judges you whenever you do anything bad and everyone was given birth to with a conscience.

Now you see from the above points the main reason why you should be good. Inasmuch as you have been charged to be good, you shouldn’t be foolish. Always have this at the back of your mind.

In conclusion, the Bible says that we should be gentle as a dove and wise as a serpent. This saying alone encompasses everything you need to know about being good. It will help you get along well with people in general—whether they are hot headed or calm, slow or fast, weak or strong. With this, you’ll be good, people will tag you as the “GOOD GUY” and you will also experience positive changes with your life moving in the right direction. Thanks for taking your time to read this.
